HOW TO BE MISS AMERICA WITHOUT THE COMPETITION

LOS ANGELES: Downtown

The Life as an Intern
I pulled up to the American Apparel Factory Warehouse in Downtown LA. For the first time, the mystery behind the clean, white American Apparel stores was revealed.

Why America Loves AMERICAN APPAREL
Why do we all pay $20 for a t-shirt we know that we can find for pocket change at Target or K-Mart?  Dov Charney, the CEO of American Apparel said the company is,

“A heritage brand.  It’s like liberty, prosperity, pursuit of happiness for every man worldwide.  That’s my America.”

Before my very eyes, the American Dream slowly unraveled.

Every American Apparel product is made in America, in downtown Los Angeles. A collection of orange buildings, totaling 800,000 square feet, towered above my head. At first glance, these buildings may seem typical to any type of production facility- windows open, tattered paint, and constant exchange of packages.
There’s more to the MAGIC.
Within the buildings, the company has its own dye house, garment house, and knitting facility. There is absolutely NO OUTSOURCING, and each worker’s wage is around $12.00 an hour, nearly 3 dollars higher than the average minimum wage in America.
Bought
I peered through the American Apparel  the little America, with my eyes open and my lens ready. I was able to take a peak of the American Apparel “Flea” Market, where every item is nearly 90% off retail. Additionally, I peered into the outlet store, which was by far the largest collection of American Apparel bows, watches, button-ups, and tees that I have ever been to.  Finally, I was able to take a glance at the showroom, which retailers visit when looking to buy items for production.
